The Future

The on-going development of Aldgate reveals the degree to which the area is evolving and the potential of the area to become one of the most exciting places to live, work and spend time.

The development pipeline is impressive with a range of developers and landowners investing in new office and retail developments with at least

  • 3,500 new homes being planned by 2025,
  • 3,300 new hotel rooms,
  • 2,700 student accommodation rooms
  • 7 new public squares and open spaces
  • 40+ new cafes and restaurants all of which will bring with it new streets and civic hubs and expansion of creative industries including a new media hub and community facilities and many more shopping and leisure destinations.

There are also plans to expand and improve the street market, create an enhanced and ever growing evening economy and ever increasing vibrant high streets. In the medium to longer term, it is the availability of some key development sites which offers an opportunity to provide access to sustainable employment opportunities, especially for local residents and support for existing small and medium size enterprises (SMEs), with a particular focus on research and knowledge-based sectors, office services, green industries, as well as an expanding creative and cultural sector.

Aldgate, with Old Street to its north, the Olympic Park and the Royal Docks to its north east and south east respectively, is also part of a fast-developing tech-city quad which includes London’s only Enterprise Zone and is therefore also a regeneration priority for London’s Mayor and the Greater London Authority.
