If you’re keen to get to know Aldgate better this If you’re keen to get to know Aldgate better this year, then let us give you a head start with this Greetings from Aldgate, courtesy of our Placemaking Director, Will:

“One of my favourite hidden gems in Aldgate is The Whitechapel Gallery. It’s great to escape the bustle of the streets and wander through their free exhibition spaces, or browse the fantastic selection of art books in their shop. The food in their restaurant is also great.”

“Out with the old and in with the new.” But maybe “Out with the old and in with the new.” But maybe not too much of the out...

We’re rather partial to some Aldgate history, and 2025 marked the 200th birthday of this painting depicting the gateway of the Priory of the Holy Trinity, called Christ-Church, near Aldgate.

Demolished in 1813, the main entrance to the priory was through the gateway shown in this picture. The priory had been founded by Queen Matilda (Good Queen Maud) around 1108. Her daughter, another Queen Matilda, maintained a close relationship with it, even having two of her children buried there.

The priory was dissolved in 1532, and in 1592, it was sold to “the Lord Mayor, the commonalty and the citizens of London”. The land it had once owned was given to prominent political and merchant figures. By 1846, little to none of the original priory remained, although some of the original architecture is preserved within the local buildings.

Who knew?
